Benefits of Meditation

In today's increasingly fast paced and connected world, we are experiencing a constant stream of distractions and notifications that make it difficult to be in the present moment. You know, like how you're reading this but thinking about something else! We watch TV, while working on the laptop and replying to friends on snapchat simultaneously. We watch our sons softball game and order the week’s groceries at the same time. Constant multitasking is the norm with the insane conveniences at our fingertips! Very rarely do our minds get to rest. To take a second. Take a breath. Don’t get me wrong, the benefits of the internet and other technological enhancements are incredible if we can learn to harness them. If we can learn to not let them control us.

Meditation is not a new concept, nor is the scientific research surrounding its benefits recent (although studies continue to confirm and add to the overwhelming benefits). There are over 3000 studies on the benefits of meditation. Some of the studies indicated that meditating even 20 minutes per day for a few weeks was already enough to start experiencing the benefits. Rather than go into all of the benefits, a few are summarized a below:

Physical Benefits

  • Reduced risk of heart diseases and stroke

  • Reduced blood pressure

  • Decreased inflammatory disorders

  • Reduced risk of Alzheimer’s

  • Improved immune system and resilience to stress

Mental Benefits

  • Improved focus, attention and ability to work under stress

  • Improved information processing and decision making

  • Improved learning, memory and self awareness

  • Improved mood and psychological well-being

  • Prevents you from trap of multitasking too often
